I might differ a bit here.. like this never happens ;) find a used 500-CS( or CS-500) which runs about 1/4 to 1/2 of the 2509/11. A cheapo memory upgrade gets you 10.3 IOS which has enough features to make it useful.
Brad- I would almost recommend a 2912 or 2924 over the 1900. You need both but the 2900 offers more flexiblity for learning things like etherchannel for example. Of course, the Cat5K is a good tool but it's pricy even without the RSM. You might find a better deal on a 2901 for set command practice. I did consider for myself a 5002 but I decided that at some point I will find a good deal on a RSM.. ok.ok.. I can dream :) I agree wholeheartly with the ISDN simulator.
