I was using a 1603 router containing the ver 12 IOS sending you the sh
ver output, as per what i have Ver 12 should work on your router.

I also tried upgrading this router with IOS 12 although it has more flash
but less DRAM to operate and consequently it failed so I reverted back to
the preserved IOS ver 11.
