You can implement fast/gigabit EtherChannels in a STP environment. One of the benefits to F/GEC is that it can take redundant paths between switches and make them appear to STP as a single link (thus no blocking). Don't believe the hype entirely about the performance benefits. Because of the way the traffic is "load-shared" across the links, you won't get more data between two hosts across a F/GEC than you would across a single link.
