I decided to go to the definite IPX site (www.novell.com) and try to find some information regarding the packet sizes in RIP and SAP updates. I was able to find where they specifically state that all devices on a LAN must be configured for the same packet size. So, this explains why things broke when I changed only the router. :-)
The moral of the story is: if you feel the need, use this on WAN links if you're forced to run RIP over the WAN. It's probably too much hassle on LAN segments.
