It could be possible to only use 4 routers and still be able to do some complicated labs. But what real CCIE lab is about is to put a lot of stuff in one physical topology, mixing all of this together, confusing you which protocol or interface you still need to get to, what and how the redistribution will play in this whole mess, making all of it depend on many other things you might have configured earlier and being able to keep on going without breaking later what worked before. From my own experience as well as most of the "real" preparation labs you'll find will require more routers. I used 9 routers and 1 switch. This allowed me to do most labs from all the resources I was able to find on the web.
Good Luck ! And yeah, it worked for me !
