Well, all the certs lower than CCIE are good for two things (in my opinion):
1. folks wanting to change careers can show a certain level of competence
right away.
2. these days resumes are searched for keywords in corporate HR and
recruiter databases, so job postings tend to favor resumes that can easily
match keywords. I imagine that this could result in a situation where a
newcomer with a CCNP gets called in for an interview and a much more
competent/experienced candidate who is two months away from taking CCIE is
skipped over because the hiring manager told the HR admin to put the "CCNP"
keyword as a requirement when querying a database of dozens of applicants.

anyway, I have gone after the lower certs on the way to CCIE for the two
reasons listed above.
