The 3000 VPN concentrators do encryption via software. The 3015 and above models can use the Scalable Encryption Processor (SEP) hardware accelerators to offload the encryption processing.
According to the documentation, the 3030 and above can use a "programmable DSP-based security accelerator". The only explanation I have found on Cisco's web site about DSP is "digital signal processor". What does that have to do with IPsec encryption?
