perhaps this is begging the question, be the answer 9 or 16 or whatever, but if you need that many ports someplace, might you consider a 4006 or two? Or a 3508 with several of the 3548's hanging off it?
With a large number of 3548's daisy chained, you may run into backplane capacity problems. there might be better ways to address the problem you are trying to solve.
