Tom, I agree with your assessment of John's response, but I have to 
share a story.  kc Claffy (her spelling) is one of the leading 
researchers in internet performance (www.caida.org). She has a 
fantastic three-dimensional visualization display of BGP routes 
propagating over the globe, and letting people literally see the 
effects of flapping and thrashing.

For many years, I watched her show this at most IETF meetings, and 
observed that it probably would be best appreciated on drugs. Well, 
last year, I went to the IETF with a recently broken foot, and, when 
it came to the plenary, I was _full_ of narcotics.

And, dammit, she didn't show it!
