Just to rule out the "smack yourself on the head if you realise you've done this" reason - don't suppose the image has been ftp'd from one box to another somewhere along the line? And transferred as ascii in the process? Speaking from experience (yes, I smacked myself on the head when I realised what I'd done) - that can give those symptoms.
