can you ping the mail server by name? I experienced the same problem.... turns out, the remote pc was authenticating to a different domain than the mail server was on.... (no broadcast traffic between domains) after adding the mail server to the host file on the PC, it worked fine.
I'm still trying to figure out if there's a way to allow multiple domains in the VPN config....
