You most certainly CAN preserve your original configuration that is in NVRAM. You are simply telling IOS NOT to load the config stored in NVRAM on boot up (0x2142). This then allows you to access the privileged exec of IOS. Note STEP 9 specifically for your question. I have forgotten this crucial step before...man that hurts when CW2k or a backup config isn't near by. :-( Hope this helps.
