Use something like whatsup gold to monitor the DSL line. Have it send traffic across the line every 60 seconds or so. We're doing like that with our cable-modem backup connection and it's great! It does two things: 1) puts occasional traffic across the line so the ISP doesnt think the line is not in use, and 2) let's me know when the lines goes down and I have to call my ISP!
