>From what I worked in the isp world, ^701$ matches routes with AS number 701 only in the AS-PATH 701$ matches routes end with 701, such as 1234 701, 234 345 701, etc _701$ matches routes end with 701, I would say it's same as 701$ _701_ matches routes that have 701 anywhere in the AS-PATH Hope this helps.
