From the nature of the discussion, I suspect that many, but not all of those here have a doctorate. I would say that someone with such a degree who thinks it essential to write or edit here is making too much of himself. I said Ph.D, not Ph.D-level. Ph.D level is a reasonable standard for many subjects. This level of knowledge is not necessarily attained by everyone who happens to have the Ph.D in that subject, nor is the Ph.D. a prerequisite for having such knowledge. CZ is a secondary work, not a primary work. Scholarship is not the benchmark. Understanding is the benchmark, and that is considerably different. Having my degree in a different subject entirely from where my present expertise lies has brought some perspective.
Subjects vary, and so do people.

Well, of course anyone who has given this much thought has noticed that.
Editors will have editorial authority only with regard to their disciplines
and their specific areas of expertise. So, most physicists will not be able
to approve literature articles. Indeed, most editors can be expected to do
much of their work not as editors but as authors, since they'll be working
outside of their areas much of the time.

articles, is what qualifies an editor."
Quick question: how do you evaluate "successful writing or editing of
articles," and who evaluates it? I have a way to answer that question;
what's yours?
