David & CI Devants --

Respoonding to your note in the Forum --
that an oracle has advised me to stay out of today --
you very wisely e-schew the futility of creating a CI Style Manual (CISM?),
but then you ask for us to adopt a single one of the standard ones out there.

I know that this will sound heretical, if not positively anarchical, but long
years
of experience as a transdisciplinarist (though I'm pretty sure I've never typed
out
that word before) tell me that, unlike the situation in a field-specific
journal,
it will engender nothing but gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair to try and
impose a single style sheet on people who are accustomed to using their own.
If you need style models who have always been rather sensible about these
things, I would say to look in the direction of math and science journals,
but folks in the social sciences have long had the APA style sheet forced
on them, and on the third hand, the "five-year literature window" POV of
research journals is just not suited to fields that require more exact
historiographies of their texts.

I would recommend letting this float, fitting the style sheet to the field,
and letting writers follow the styles that they are already accustomed to.
I know that this appears to create civil wars where they interact, but
the fact is that the civil war was always already there, and it's
best that CI not get involved in it.

Call it the "Prime Directive".
