Bill & All,

All I've done here is provide an initial dataset
on the current state of level forks in Wikiedia.

One of the failings of Wikipedia is that policy decisions are very often made
in the absence of real data, whether with regard to the states of the arts in
the various subject areas or even with regard to the states of the articles
in Wikipedia itself.

Most of these level forks were in place before my time in Wikipedia, but from
the cases where I answered the WP:AXS (Make Technical Articles Accessible) tag,
and from more general knowledge of pedagogy in the various fields, it is easy
to guess how the current bi- and tri-furcation naturally arose over time.

By the way, the level forks have different degrees of formalization
across the various fields -- from Physics, where they have a standard
pair of tags for linking "the non-technical introduction" to what they
call "the proper encyclopedia article", to areas where various schools
of mergists have been at work, typically just throwing out all the info
that makes them feel like non-experts.
