I wonder if CZ might be interested in trying out the LiquidThreads extension for MediaWiki. LQT replaces ordinary talk pages with much more user-friendly threaded discussion. See
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LiquidThreads for more info and http://wikieducator.org/ for a production site that uses it. LQT requires the latest version of MediaWiki (trunk) to run, but might make a useful addition with a future software upgrade.
