I haven't tested it by myself, but something into this direction looks
good. It's probably important that you embolden the glyphs more
horizontally than vertically; I don't know whether the emboldening
stuff in FontForge can do that already -- if not, simply magnify the
glyphs vertically, apply emboldening, remove overlaps, and undo the
vertical magnification afterwards.
