Hmm, indeed, I have only tested it with the CM fonts (without
type1ec/cm-super).

Oh.  But that means that, in order to get this pretty effect, one
needs to load the vertical package first, and immediately switch to
horizontal.

Why not make it also available without CJKvert?

But now you need root access in order to change the .fd files in the
$TEXMF tree.  One could use ~/texmf, but that seems a bit overkill for
just one setting.

An idea would be to be able to set the \CJKhdef option within the TeX
file as well.

Ah, I forgot: CJK doesn't use .fdv anymore for vertical effects only,
but now loads .fdx for any sort of effect.  My mistake.
