Hmmm, I will only have time tonight to check, but I am under
impression that you need UTF8 to understand CJKchar arguments (or some
other specific CJK encoding like EUC-JP/KR, etc.). UTF8 is special
because it can handle MANY languages, not just the CJK and English. So
you must choose an encoding that understands the CJK characters, any
latin encoding will not work... so you cannot "not mess with latin
encodings" if you want to suddenly add CJK!
Would you like to try CJKutf8 and its examples? Then, make a CJK
environment everytime you need a char? AFAIU bibtex understand UTF8
also so your problems will not be too big.
