I think it is a hugely short-sighted overview of the breed for those
observers to attribute American-bred Cavaliers as being, in some pervues,
"American Type" when, as Peggy Mickelson and perhaps others imply, it may be
just plain (universal) bad breed type >>
Hello All:
I really have to agree bad breed type is bad breed type. I really do
not think there is an English type vs and American type. There is a great
diversity in Cavalier type period, and within these types are good and bad.
You may not perfer a certain type (look) but when compared to our standard
you make a decision as to whether it meets the criteria. In your minds eye,
you may have a concept of the type you like but it is a good idea to
familiarize yourself with other types and learn to appreciate their
qualities. Remember all our dogs ultimately came from England. Cavaliers
are comparatively a young breed. When breeding Cavaliers, you must know
your pedigrees or you can lose type very quickly. When I started breeding I
went to England to see the ancestors that appeared in my dog's pedigrees. I
wanted not only to see the grandparents but also several generations. This
afforded me the ability to see what lines were brought together that nicked
with what I was breeding. Being large, small, long/ short on leg etc.
happens here in the US as well as England, Australia, NZ, France etc. but as
breeders what we are striving for is a balanced, typey Cavalier. I have
people come up to me all the time and say, "I know what muzzle length should
be but I like it very very short on the Cavalier." My comment back is read
the standard. I like real short muzzles too "on my Charlies " but then they
are not Cavaliers. Personally, I want to breed Cavaliers that are
beautiful, typey and that have great confirmation and movement.
I really do think that there are wonderful dogs being bred in many of
the countries of the world which is evidenced in the homebreds here and the
ones that have been imported here to the states. Look at the top 20 ratings
and you will see the mixture. Some are dual registered and some only AKC
but in the end Quality is Quality.
