The active ingredient in heartguard, ivermectin, does cause a severe reaction in collie types. I am sure that mixed breed pets that a vet would frequently see would be difficult to classify as to how much "collie" is in the dog and would cause a problem for deciding on the safety of using ivermectin. However, for the Cavalier ivermectin is the safe choice IMO.
I don't buy mine from the vet anyway. There are other, less expensive ways of getting ivermectin if you have more than one or two dogs. Or you can ask your vet to write you a prescription for heartguard and buy it from Jeffers (1-800-jeffers) in Alabama or from www.drsfosterandsmith.com However, if your dog has tolerated Interceptor and it has not had any adverse reactions, you're probably safe with that.
