This seems to me to be a basic argument between a right to privacy and the
right to know. Knowing the financial particulars of all the families in
Laura's neighborhood might help me make a decision on whether or not I
wanted I wanted to buy the house next door to Laura, but I don't have the
right to ask to see her or her neighbors IRS returns for the last 5 years.

Now, if she had her house up for sale and I was interested in buying it, I
could ask to see the property taxes, the termite certification and things
pertaining to the house. The same is true in dogs. If you are interested in
using a stud that has been offered or in purchasing a dog, then you can ask
to see the health papers on that dog. Insisting that anyone has the right to
know every detail about dogs that they do not own nor will ever be allowed
to use for breeding seems a little bit much to me. Especially with the way
gossip flows through the dog fancy--- and gets added to with every
retelling.

I watched a little of the Civil Rights Commission meeting on CSPAN yesterday
and thought how similarly Chairperson Mary Berry handled the meeting to the
ones that I have attended in dog clubs. The average citizen has no idea of
the behavior in the committees, just as the average dog owner has no
conception of the politics that goes on in dog clubs. When ever some person
insists that they have a right to something that is none of their business,
I always wonder why and I never take what they say at face value. Being in
dog clubs for 26 years has taught me never to trust appearances.
All the best,
Susan Cochran
