All dogs handle altering differently. But I have one of my girls who was
spayed at a little over 3 years old. It took slightly over 3 years for her
coat to get completely unmanageable - she truly has the coat (weight and
texture) of a sheep!! Twice in the summer I have shaved her to the skin -
then she becomes my little beaglier :o) I have 4 other oldies in my house
that are altered and none of them have the same problem. Some take a little
trimming for length - but most get along just fine other than cutting the
slippers. But I would say 2 to 3 years is what it takes for the true nature
of the altering to hit the dog's coat. The only way I would be horrified is
if a dog was matted dirty and unloved :o) Otherwise the dog needs to fit
the lifestyle of the people who own it.
