In follow up to Liz Gordon's note -
The advantages to clicker or other positive motivational training is that
encourages the dog to "give behaviors," rather than discourage from
undesired behaviors. It opens the dog's mind to keep trying for the reward
rather than making them afraid of being punished for the wrong behavior. It
places the responsibility for training results where it belongs - on the
trainer not the dog. If you make a mistake with rewarding, too late, etc.,
the bond of trust is not jeopardized, the dog merely learns more slowly. In
the case of incorrectly used corrections, the dog can become more confused,
intimidated and looses trust. Having learned dog training in the 70's,
using the Koehler method and seeing the sometimes disastrous results, I am
totally commited to training my dogs using clicker and other positive
training methods. It makes training fun for both me and my dogs!
