I had a friend with a dog she took in as a rehome that lost most of the function of his jaw. Could maybe only open it 20% from age 3 on. They honestly never did figure out what the cause was - one thing mentioned by the vets was Rocky Mtn Tick Fever. If they live in a wooded area they might check for that in blood work.
