I just never allow the behavior to begin. The moment I see them begin to dig, be it in the yard or their bed or crate I give them an "uh uh, noooo" and that's the end of it. Mine have all tried in each of these spots but only once. I figure it isn't any different than letting them know chewing on a shoe or other non toy item is unacceptable.
