When puppy buyers come to visit, whether I have puppies or not, I try to
educate them. I ask how much they know about the breed and if they know the
difference between the AKC and the Cavalier Club. Most of them do know the
history.
The reason a breeder, who was against the acceptance of AKC dogs, would go
into detain on this issue is to be able to control the vote of the new puppy
buyers. Although they are required to give an application to the club, many
of them give membership in the CKCSC to their new owners (a lovely idea but
with a motive, sometimes) so they can lobby them when there is a vote that
they need their vote for. Unfortunately, I believe that type of campaign has
been effective in the past. I am not so sure it will work on the stud dog
issue. I have listened to arguments against accepting AKC only dogs and even
from the most convincing debators I don't believe the reasons given (perhaps
not the true ones) will convince anyone - unless they don't tell the truth.
The main reason I have heard is that it will open the club up to puppy mills.
Those of us who pay attention to these things know that very few puppy
mills offer even AKC registration any more. As a matter of fact the problem
seems to be more serious with the new imports. Imports, even puppy mill
imports, can have AKC registration, but they are also elegible for CKCSC
registration and therefore to use that as an argument would certainly be
dishonest. Yes, some might tell that to those whose votes they hope to sway,
but to put that in a mailing (since mailings were the MO in the past) would
be dishonest and would hopefully "catch up with them to bite them in the
ass." (Sorry, an old saying I could not resist using.)
It is one thing to lobby for your point of view, it is another to distort
the truth for selfish purposes.
