I promised myself I would not fall into the trap of writing about the above subject
but cannot resist asking those people who are so vociferous about mandatory testing
just what they want breeders to test for - off the top of my head I can think of the
following conditions that are known in Cavaliers - I am sure there are many more but
it is late at night here
MVD, Retinal dysplasia, retinal folds, distichiasis, cataracts (various - some late
onset) hip dysplasia, patellas, syringohydromyelia (appears to be on the increase)
epilepsy, episodic falling syndrome, elbow dysplasia, auto immune problems, dry eye
curly coat, diabetes, thyroid problems, deafness

May I suggest that by the time a bitch was tested for all of the above she would be
past breeding age or are you just going to "cherry pick" those conditions that are
known to you.
Also having got mandatory testing in place what then? Is a committee going to be set
up to tell the breeders what stock they are allowed to breed and to which dog?
I have nothing against testing but am very "anti" being dictated to by some unknown
official who very possibly has never bred a gerbil never mind a litter of puppies

Finally it really upsets me to read all this "pet person" - breeder business. I have
Cavaliers, I've had them for 27 years, I breed Cavaliers BUT my Cavaliers are my pets
also
I started off by buying two pets for my children - the fact that I have made breeding
them one of my hobbies does not mean that I love them any the less.
I am sure that the majority of breeders on this list feel exactly the same way
