Hi, Myra,
While I am usually in agreement with you on many things, we differ here.
I do like flagyl and it may well be the "ticket" for this puppy.
However, metronidazole has some bad side effects (such as ataxia;
usually transient) and it is not something I would use unless I had to
use it. Out of the ten dogs we had on flagyl during an epidemic of HGE
here, TWO got transient ataxia. That is a fairly high percentage and it
is surely not representative, but I am careful when using that drug. I
might carry it (with immodium) in my first aid kit, but only as a last
resort at an "away" show and hoping to see the vet shortly after that.
Additionally, as there are many things which can soothe the stress of
travel diarrhea without harm (pepto bismol, Fastrack) I would certainly
try those first. In my opinion if a dog is sick enough to break through
pepto it is too sick to show; this is how diseases get around dog
shows....in fact how MY lot got their bout of HGE after a show.
Giving Flagyl or a pinch of Tylan may help your dog in the short run; in
the long run it will make the bugs more resistant IN YOUR DOG, so that
it has less effect when needed. And those same bugs will be spread to
other dogs in the form where they are intractable and less subject to
treatment.
I just don't think it is worth a ribbon to put a dog in the ring who is
too sick to feel better with pepto or something similar. And, having
been the recipient of a pro handler's "pinch of tylan" (which didn't get
the dog through the class, but left a huge mess through which MY dogs
walked and ultimately got sick), I don't think it is fair to other
exhibitors.
ER....in this instance I best say IMHO!!
Best,
Suze
