I do weird things like this to my puppies from time to time--making sure it
always ends up totally positive. I do it so they have a wide variety of
experiences with humans so new and unusual things won't worry them. They
will probably come across many different humans in their lives and some of
them will act in a way that is different. I don't want my puppies to be
afraid of different. If someone were to do something like this
unexpectedly, I would make sure to act happy and make the incident turn out
positive for the puppies--no matter how I felt underneath. They WILL pick
up on the owner's reaction to the incident. I do believe they know we
humans are different from them and can learn that when we do an action that
when done by a dog would be threatening, it may not mean that at all when
done by a human. And that they can learn to be more accepting of most human
behavior. It works. Most of my puppies are quite fearless and outgoing,
with only a very few exceptions.
