No, I said that that aesthesia free cleaning does not allow for cleaning up under the gum line, however, I did not say it would do nothing to prevent gum disease. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque and calculus deposits on the teeth near the gum line (sometimes these do go up underneath the gum line, especially on dogs over two years of age). There is no question that a more thorough cleaning can be accomplished while a dog is under anesthesia, however, there are circumstances where this is either not possible or an alternative method is desired. In these instances, anesthesia free cleaning is far more effective than doing nothing. If someone is desirous of having anesthesia free cleaning but is worried about infection, they can ask their vet for a script for a short course of antibiotics. I have said all I have to say on this subject as I feel there has been enough energy expended on this topic to light the entire city of Manhattan for a week.
