My spamassassin shows:
C:\Perl\bin>spamassassin.bat -V
SpamAssassin version 3.0.2
running on Perl version 5.8.6
So what is 0.8x a reference to ?

First upgrade to 0.8x which uses clamd.conf instead of clamav.conf.
You will find a well commented example in clamav-0.8x/etc/clamd.conf
