It is a programming interface for the SendMail smtp server. It allows developers to extend the functionality of SendMail by creating various message processing tools such as anti-spam filters, address validation, connection rate monitoring, and, in the case of viruses, an anti-virus interface. The ClamAV milter is one such. By it's self it does not test viruses but it does work between SendMail and ClamAV to process attachments and hand to them to ClamAV for testing.
