OK - I'm using static IP on the server, and /etc/resolv.conf points to /etc/network/nameservers, on the dynamic IP Ubuntu client /etc/resolv.conf points to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf (which is actually /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf) Not sure how much difference this makes.
