That may be better, or not. If clamav is installed to the default program 
directory you are right. But the command line option is still needed to choose 
a totally different application directory, lets say z:\antivirus\clamav. The 
system wide environment variable would not help in that case. The only 
possibility apart from the command line would be to let the installer write the 
path to the registry and clamd.exe use that value and the relative path 
\conf\clamd.conf to locate the config file. I for myself like programs, that 
don't use the registry. I am happy that Nigel offers the files comprising 
clamav apart from the installer msi, so upgrading is just stop the daemon and 
copy over, uninstalling is just deleting.

Yeah, but why use this uncomfortable workarround, if one could use a system 
wide environment variable like ProgramFiles?
Hardcoding a path was a common problem in the past, but should stay in the past.
