I am seeing the same thing on Debian GNU/Linux x86 for the AWT demo since a couple of days. Although I don't know which 'classpath' you are using. If it is the one inside gcc it might well be that it is missing some bug fixes and that the swing GNU Classpath demo was recently extended to use additional features not yet present in the gcc/classpath tree.
