Christian told me about http://c1.complang.tuwien.ac.at/cacaowiki/EclipseIcuBug It describes a subtle bug with icu and SoftReferences. I checked and it hasn't been fixed in the latest icu included with 3.2 yet. More info can also be found in the the bug reports filed by Edwin Steiner about this: http://bugs.icu-project.org/cgi-bin/icu-bugs?findid=5183 https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=139457 This probably impacts every runtime that doesn't clear SoftReferences exactly like the runtime they tested against (which is probably all of them...)
