I know I'm asking for a lot, but don't you think it would be worth to add some documentation on how to get started on a specific platform? I recently tried to get classpath running on a Mandrake 8.1 distro. No luck so far, since compiling automake, autoconfm glib etc. from scratch was not enough to get it working (I don't recall the details, but at the moment the gtk libs seem to be the problem).
