Well I can't use PNG since Netscape 4.x compatibility is the whole point of using an image in the first place (decent browsers know how to display an empty cell...)Don't use GIF due to licensing problems. I think JPEG recently became problematic as well.
I believe that the GIF format doesn't *require* the patented (and therefore problematic) LZW compression, but I don't know for sure. I also don't know if there are any tools that will create patent-free gifs, but it would be nice if there were. I don't think LZW or any other compression would buy a huge amount on a single pixel anyway ;)
Or is there something other than the compression that's bad about gifs?
