I don't think this is entirely true. What CCA does is to invoke the Windows Update Agent, which talks to Microsoft's update servers by default. Changes to the registry are only needed if you want to talk to a local WSUS server. Those can be done either by group policy via a domain or by manual modification. Also I do not believe that this is officaly supported by microsoft and may cause other issues getting updates when students leave the college.
