On the jsr311 I've got positive feedback on this issue:

For us theis faeture would allow a much nicer implementation of
TypeHandlerSpace and it would obsolete Jax-rs extensions.
As the feature doesn't break compaitibility with the current jax-rs spec I
suggest we implement it right away.
