The question is what do we want log or act about, the fact that an 
authenticated user requests something or that a user successfully entered 
username and password. The latter is unproblematic only with cookie-based login 
while the first approach seems to fit the web architecture better. I also think 
it covers most usecases, as e.g. an automatic logout after a certain time 
refers to the time of the last request and not to the time of the initila login.
