Brian, I am suffocated with rage too when I hear the "I had other priorities"
excuses from the Bush Leagues (not mine, from a friend), but I think there
are better rejoinders. France helped the U.S. win the war of independence
(or, if you like, the war to determine who would benefit from the riches of
the colonies). Without France, we'd all be talking like Tony Blair. Well,
probably not, but I had to get at old Tone. Lord, it's gotten to the point
where I almost feel for the poor bugger. I said almost....
A more compelling rejoinder is that France was not the aggressor in either
World War I or II. There are many (moral and political) arguments for our not
having gotten involved in either war, but a wish for isolationism when a
friendly country has been attacked is probably not one of the better ones.
(And of course the US benefited mightily, in economic terms, from the
outcomes of both wars. Which is an obviously capitalist - but nevertheless
legitimate - argument, from the point of view of the rulers of the country.)
In the present case, the US has not been attacked by Iraq, is hardly a weak,
overrun nation who can't defend itself. And that's just one reason. The US is
wrong, on every conceivable level, in all directions, in every alternate
universe. The war on Iraq would be wrong even if all the unindicted war
criminals in the White House had served in earlier wars. Why should any
nation with half a brain running it support such a venture? Oh, sorry, Tone.
