so very well spoken, Brian.

this is why art, music, dance, clothing, cosmology, all the facets of
creative expression in the culture are the tools that i espouse. my friend
always quotes ben franklin who said, "in a war, you can have the guns and
i'll have the music and in the long run, my side will win.
to be frank, those on this list are following a prophetic calling.
if you look in the second chapter of Aryeh Kaplan's book Meditation
and the Bible, you will see the hebrew word, 'nava', rendered in
several ways. navie or prophet, if you render the word to
'navach' it means to bark. you may know a near compulsion
to start barking when conditions seem wrong. barking from
the outside can have its proper effect when the timing is right.
taking the word to the root, 'navie' means to flow or gush forth
like a spring or well. in that mode, you are the place where others
gather for re-newal. in the meeting of activists at antioch, there
were both poles of prophetic folks, the barkers and the gushers.
i too prefer to invite people in, to create a way of living that
others want to enter into, inviting, always inviting
into a place where joy is.
to become a spring or source, it is necessary to tend to the places where
you were wounded or marked by life. when the culture
is out of balance, there are many called to bring healing because
of the affliction suffered. this culture of peace we are striving
to create should take into account that the wounds suffered
are also the wounds of the collective culture. we are called
to bring the fruit of our struggling in the darkness to the
center of the people, to make as many as possible aware of
what you have learned. i think works of art can be your voice
that continues to speak, even when you are no longer present.
along with this call to be springs or sources through
affliction, there is also inspiration. in this circle, there are
dreams coming, inspirations coming, even amazing visitations.
you are called to put this forth, to find a way to have the
vision hold in the timebound world. again, you can get
up and speak, but your inspired works are the more stable
and lasting Voice.
so, i think this war is like another unconscious attempt
to call forth, to awaken the many gifts that have been left
untouched. may we see through this war to a culture
emerging beneath it, coming through it. follow
the dreaming gourd.
