Dear Senators:
The Bush Administration continues to push economic policies that will have devastating consequences for the people of Latin America. The third round of negotiations for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) are now underway in El Salvador. CAFTA represents the latest attack by the US on Latin American sovereignty, and is an economic component of the broader military and political strategy of US domination throughout the world. Furthermore, the Bush Administration is taking advantage of the worldwide attention on the war to furtively promote unpopular policies like free trade and privatization.
In Central America, people are not fooled. Though the right-wing government supports Bush's war, the people are mobilizing against it, while continuing to resist privatization and CAFTA. Massive protests are happening on Wednesday, April 2 in El Salvador to demand an end to the war, privatization, and CAFTA. In the US, a coalition of organizations has formed to oppose CAFTA, and people are organizing to raise awareness about the negative effects of free trade, and are taking action to stop CAFTA before it starts.
Please oppose CAFTA.
