Greetings everyone!

Jim has given me the Release Manager role for the 1.x series of CLFS,
so I wanted to update everyone on where we stand, what the roadmap
looks like, and what will be happening post-release. If anyone has
any comments or suggested improvements, I'm open to hearing them!

Currently we are in a version freeze. Kernel 2.6.17 went in
yesterday, and today will be bumped to the 2.6.17.1 release. Also,
minor improvements to man and man-pages have been incorporated. The
new release of Binutils is expected on Friday of this week. So, the
plan is to cut an 1.0.0-rc1 release of CLFS on Saturday, June 24th.
>From that point onward, we'll plan for weekly rc releases on Saturdays
until the final release of 1.0.0, currently scheduled for July 15th.
If rc1 shows good, without any major issues being found, we'll allow
for 2 weeks of text cleanups in the book, and release 1.0.0 final on
July 8th.

Once RC1 is released on Saturday, I'd like everyone who can to try to
build from those instructions, on whatever platforms you can support.
Any and all problems you find should be noted in the CLFS ticket
system on trac.cross-lfs.org or clfs.be-linux.org. Weekly updates on
progress will be posted to this list.

Now for post-release matters. It has been decided to continue
development of the 1.x tree indefinately. Once we release 1.0.0, a
branch will be created in SVN named "stable". Updates which are found
to be relatively stable will be included in that branch for future
inclusion in a 1.0.x maintenance release currently planned to occur
approx. every 2 months. Joe Ciccone will be continuing development of
the sysroot branch, which when it stabilizes, will become the 2.x
versions of CLFS, leaving 2 independent tracks (1.x old method, 2.x
sysroot).

Thanks for all your help in getting CLFS 1.0.0 ready to release! I
look forward to working with each of you!

Jeremy
CLFS 1.x release manager
