you probably didn't enable the 8x16 font for the framebuffer console.

Yep.  It does appear to have been a kernel issue.  It took me quite a
while to figure out how to enable vga (I finally had to enable vga
through frame buffering) since I could never get it to simply let me
enable vga for the console.  Oh well.  At least it finally works.  I
was afraid that some aspect of X let you get the decent resolution in
spite of the fact that you wouldn't be running an X Server at that
point.  Fortunately that's not the case.  Thanks for your help.
