Did you mount /dev/pts?

There is no directory named pts in /dev. Only /dev/ptmx and all
/dev/tty 's. When I create the directory pts as suggested in the
solution to this problem on trac.cross-lfs.org/faq
<http://trac.cross-lfs.org/faq> then It vanishes on reboot or when I
try to mount it.

That is correct, you may want to check your /lib/udev/devices to make
sure pts is in that directory. Plus you should be getting some errors
during your bootup, if /dev/pts is not there.
